K: Well, it’s just, according to the Judeo-Christian idea of pregnancy–
Me: No. Just Christian. Not Judeo Christian. Judaism doesn’t have the same ideas about abortion and pregnancy as Christianity.
K: What? But the Old Testament?
Me: Well, no. Because Judaism isn’t just the Hebrew Bible. It’s also the Talmud. Like, for example, fetuses are referred to as “water” from conception until viability. There’s no “life begins at conception” type idea in Judaism.
K: …
Me: And the mother’s health always comes before the baby’s, at least until viability. Because potential life is not seen as “real” as actual life. And in some interpretations, this includes not just physical health, but also mental and emotional health.
K: …
Me: …
K: Okay, so not saying Judeo-Christian anymore. Those are very, very different concepts. Wow.
Me: Yup.
moriah-explains-it-all is this true?
The only thing that’s inaccurate is that I said that fetuses are referred to as water from conception to viability. I was incorrect as they are only referred to as water until 40 days.

Is this true?
Yes, with the usual caveat of “two Jews, three opinions.”
(Also, whenever someone says “Judeo-Christian,” they are almost certainly ignoring differences of this magnitude, and it’s never Christianity they erase. Friends don’t let friends say “Judeo-Christian.”)
