you don’t know how important it is that Peridot has autistic traits, like breaking down, using extreme logic over feelings, hyper focusing and missing social cues
it’s important because kids learn people who do this are still valuable and have worth, that even people who have verbal tics and breakdowns aren’t less than people.
it’s important for autistic people because it validates us and shows people we can still connect and feel emotions, things that are constantly denied that autistic people can do.
it’s important because it normalizes our behaviors and even makes these behaviors acceptable: such as Garnet valuing Peridot’s input on her shipping and comforting her when she was breaking down.
The Gems are treating Peridot very carefully: they’re not infantilizing her behaviors and not demonizing her either. They are helping her learn how Earth works. They don’t get onto her for not having enough empathy in certain situations, such as when she drawls on and bores Steven being unable to relate to him. They actually encourage her.
This is a huge thing thing. It encourages kids to be more accepting of autistic people and makes me so, so happy that a character who finally acts like I do is on television.
I’m so glad Peridot is coded autistic. I really, really am.
