ptsd–peridot:

you don’t know how important it is that Peridot has autistic traits, like breaking down, using extreme logic over feelings, hyper focusing and missing social cues

it’s important because kids learn people who do this are still valuable and have worth, that even people who have verbal tics and breakdowns aren’t less than people.

it’s important for autistic people because it validates us and shows people we can still connect and feel emotions, things that are constantly denied that autistic people can do.

it’s important because it normalizes our behaviors and even makes these behaviors acceptable: such as Garnet valuing Peridot’s input on her shipping and comforting her when she was breaking down.

The Gems are treating Peridot very carefully: they’re not infantilizing her behaviors and not demonizing her either. They are helping her learn how Earth works. They don’t get onto her for not having enough empathy in certain situations, such as when she drawls on and bores Steven being unable to relate to him. They actually encourage her.

This is a huge thing thing. It encourages kids to be more accepting of autistic people and makes me so, so happy that a character who finally acts like I do is on television.

I’m so glad Peridot is coded autistic. I really, really am.

the military begins recruiting ‘soldiers’ before they grow out of their booster seat

four year olds have toy guns and green army men

by grade school you’ve memorized the star spangled banner and the pledge of allegiance

in middle school you’re old enough to play first person shooters set in war times. you and your friends brag about how many kills you have, what guns are your favorite

in high school, rotc comes to visit. you get letters in the mail detailing scholarship and housing opportunities you could have

and if you’re poor or unsure of your future or in love with the idea of ‘protecting your country’ like the men in call of duty

every branch of the military has a sponsored blog on here because they want everyone 13 and up to know that soldiers are heroes and they should join them

To those of you who were wondering, this is a very US-specific post. What gets done to you guys is terrifying, and it’s really unfair.

Ah yes I remember how the different military branches visited my high school at multiple times throughout the year and set up their little pull up bars and had little competitions and the strong little ones got lanyards so the recruiters could pick them out

I dont even know if you’re joking or not

We’re not

We are so not.

This is all 100% accurate and I just now realized how fucking creepy is all is

I took the ASVAB while in my senior year of high school and the recruiters started calling me right away.

We were all encouraged to take the ASVAB in high school whether we were planning to go into the military or not. I got a letter from West Point right after getting my results back, and honestly if I were more conservative and less of a nerdy spaghetti noodle, I would have considered it. They were very complimentary of my scores.

I’m pretty sure the only reason my high school didn’t get much military recruitment and ROTC and stuff was cuz we were a school specifically for kids on the autism spectrum and autistic people can’t serve in the military.

And I’m pretty sure the reason we didn’t get them was that we were a sci/tech high school, and they wanted us all working for the Department of Defense designing the weapons for everyone else to use.

(Worked, too. >_<)

also re: teens sitting around with their tablets and smartphones

like, if a kid can access the internet (with some privacy still) while also sitting in the same room as their parents, honestly that’s better and more social than what I did as a teenager, which was hole up in my room at my desktop computer that I couldn’t move anywhere else in the house

mostly what I see from the teens in my family is they will sit and scroll through their phone, but if something interesting starts happening, or a new person enters the room, or they see something cool they want to share, they look up and interact again, because they’re sitting right there with everyone else.

that is waaaay more social than 2002 me, hunched over my desktop for hours and only seeing my mom in passing when I went to microwave a burrito at 1am. way, way more social.

My whole family does this now. We’re all in the same room, but each on a phone, tablet, or laptop. Certain poop heads will shake their heads at how technology is dividing us.

But

Like

What do they think families have done for since ever? Talk constantly while playing educational board games every evening? No.

They’d each be reading, or sewing, or writing letters or some shit, and mostly sat quietly near each other but not bothering each other.

yes this

It reminds me of the whole “omg people on trains used to TALK to each other” argument. No, they didn’t. They read the newspaper or stared straight ahead avoiding eye contact.

also “relationship to autism” “touched by autism”

what the fuck

*touches u with my autism*

[image: a dropdown menu on autism speaks’ website that asks what your “relationship to autism” is. options include “my friend’s family is touched by autism.” end of description]

one time in class we were watching a video about autism and it used the phrase “touched by autism”

my partner and i immediately turned to each other and started rubbing our hands all over each other’s faces and saying “u have been touched by autism”

that is beautiful.

Perfect.

My finger slipped.
