How did people first figure out that it was cicadas that make this noise? I could see that taking a long time.
Were there just like a thousand years where people were like “yeah, the trees are screaming. They do that in the summer.”Story Time!!!
When my boyfriend was a kid, nobody told him about cicadas. But he knew there was more sun in the summer and he knew that noise happened in the summer. He thought the sun made that noise.
The sun, guys. He thought the sun just screamed endlessly in the summer.
The 17-year cicadas came up the year i was four – in other words, the first year my brain had developed enough to really store memories. I was confused for the following several years why summer was so much quieter than i always expected it to be.
The second time they came out was the year i graduated from college, and the sense memory was like getting hit in the head with a brick. nothing like trying to drive a car while your brain is half convinced you’re four years old.
