31 Movies 31 Days

Day 7 (technically Day 10. Getting there!):

Ossakhan Yeonae (2011). Lit. translation: Chilling Romance. English title: Spellbound.

So a while back, I heard that this movie was a Korean horror romantic comedy and was tickled pink. What a fun mix of genres! I want 20!

What I did not expect was that this movie would have this great scene I had only seen as gifs on tumblr:

(It is fantastic both in and out of context btw).

And I think that’s a nice way to start this because that was such a lovely surprise, and really, this whole film is a lovely surprise. The director clearly loved horror movies and romantic comedies, and there were so many loving references to both genres.

My boyfriend (who watched this with me, along with some other friends I forced to watch this- and who also loved this) loves Korean romcoms, and gleefully pointed out every single reference in this. Unlike some of the other Korean romcoms I’ve watched (and I admit I am no expert), I really liked these characters together. They seemed to genuinely like each other, unlike other movies where I was meant to believe that even though the girl continually rejected the dude, she had actually secretly loved him the whole time. (Not to say that Western romcoms are so much better because, no, but this has been a trend with the other Korean romcoms I watched).

I will say that I think there is a clear delineation where the horror parts are and where the romantic comedy parts are (at least for most of the movie), and that I think the romance is much stronger. I feel like that’s the case for a lot of horror + genre films, though, so it didn’t bother me much. I was also going to say that I don’t think it’s very scary, but I think that’s because I am now Old and Jaded, and am thus used to these scares, as I have seen other people talk about how creepy the horror parts are. (And they are great! But not scary to me.)

If you’re looking for something genuinely scary or creepy, or are mainly looking for send-ups to famous horror movies, I wouldn’t recommend this film. However, if you’re looking for a lighter horror movie this Halloween month, or you wish horror lady protagonists had more interesting relationships, go for it.

Do I recommend this? Hell yeah! I mean, look how cute my wife is in those gifs. I love her. I love this.

Content warnings: Death, ghosts, blood, heavy drinking (comedic), reference to child death, drowning.

Oh but it is!! These lovely screen shots are from Neko Samurai!!

Basically Dog-Gang hires dude above (Kyutaro) to kill Cat-Gang’s beloved Cat but the cat is too cute to kill and Kyutaro “accidentally” catnaps the cat and angers both gangs. It’s a wild ride.

BRUH

OK but seriously where can I find this movie
