CANADIAN FOLLOWERS:

For the first time in Canadian history a parliament member has formally sponsored a petition to legally recognize hate crimes against Muslims.

“Canada is witnessing a sharp increase in Islamophobia, which has even been described as an “epidemic” in certain large areas of the country. Citizens are aggressively and physically attacked on the streets, shopping malls, and community centres. Moreover, places of worship are being firebombed and vandalized. Islamophobic political campaigns have become very troubling, mainly during theelection periods. Furthermore, some media outlets add salt to the wound by becoming venues for anti-Muslim rhetoric under the justification of “freedom of speech,” which seems to be without boundaries and irresponsible when it comes to bashing Islam and Muslim citizens.

Under this gloomy climate, citizens from all aspects of society, responsible media, and honest, elected decision makers have the civil duty and moral obligation to stand up united to denounce all sorts of discrimination and prejudice. To come together with initiatives that clearly condemn and refuse any act, talk and policies that lead to hatred, hostility and lack of harmony within society.

On June 2nd 2010, The Canadian Muslim Forum (FMC-CMF) led delegations consisting of representatives, young professionals, activists, women advocates and others on Parliamentary Day at the Hill. The main objective of meeting the Federal parties’ caucuses on that day was to introduce and express concerns about Islamophobia, and its impact on Arab and Muslim citizens. From that day, the most noticeable remark was that most of the policy makers were not fully aware of the dangers of Islamophobia, and its implications on Canadian society.”

Samer Majzoub, initiated of petition e-411, Condemning Islamophobia Promotes Human Values

At the time of writing this petition has acquired 12,894 of its 100,000 required signatures due October 6, 2016 at 5:45 PM EDT.

I urge all my Canadian followers to sign the petition here and to share this with as many people as you can. Non-Canadians are strongly encouraged to share this as well.

@allthecanadianpolitics

Just a note, Canadian Government petitions do not require 100,000 signatures to be addressed by the Government; they only need 500 (but obviously more petition signatures are better for convincing politicians to act).

Sign this if you’re in Canada and reblog for your Canadian followers, please!

I love everything about this photoset

The lack of condescension in cultural sharing

The nonsexualization

The contextual foreignness of firm breasts in a society that doesn’t use bras

This is funny and charming

By far one of my favorite posts.

I love that across cultures, every woman grabs their boobs.

My friend is an army wife and spent some time with her husband on his Pacific posting. One day the locals invited the families from the British base for a big get-together. It was going really well but after a few hours the British women noticed that a lot of the local babies were crying, so my friend asked one of the mothers if there was something wrong, like a bug going round or something. The mother replied,

“Oh no, they’re just very hungry.”

So my friend asked, “Why don’t you feed them?”

And the mother said, “We will when you’ve gone. We use our breasts to feed them and we don’t want to embarrass you.”

And my shocked friend said, “But we do that too!”

So all the British mothers who had babies sat down and whipped out their boobs to feed them (whether they were hungry or not) and the relieved local mothers then did the same.

Two things:

– because western ladies usually cover their boobs the local ladies weren’t sure whether western women use boobs for what they’re supposed to be for

– women everywhere are considerate of other women

I also really love this photo set because, far too often, we only see pictures of African women as anthropological archetypes. They are treated like exhibits to be studied, similar to exotic animals or landscapes, rather than human beings.
I LOVE these pictures, because here we have women of two different cultures laughing and talking and playing around. You can see their personalities shining through and I LOVE IT

WW I hero Francis Pegahmagabow given Aboriginal Day honour

allthecanadianpolitics:

His Ojibway name was Binaaswi, translating roughly to “the wind that blows off.”

How apposite it is, then, that a hard wind was blowing off the choppy waters of Ontario’s Georgian Bay when the most decorated Indigenous soldier in Canada’s history was finally given an honour befitting his story.

History largely remembers him as Corp. Francis Pegahmagabow — the deadliest sniper and scout of the First World War, credited with 378 kills and 300 captures.

On Tuesday, National Aboriginal Day, a life-sized bronze monument of Pegahmagabow was unveiled in Parry Sound, Ont., almost 100 years after he earned his first medal for courage in battle. It was a tribute that many believe should have come sooner.

“He was a warrior chief,” said Perry Bellegarde, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, before a packed crowd — one that included Lt.-Gen. Marquis Hainse, commander of the Canadian Army — gathered at the shores of the bay. The wind carried his words into the distance.

Philippines gets its first transgender congresswoman

In a country that has seen a rash of anti-LGBTQ violence, Geraldine Roman’s sweep of the Bataan district seat is an especially encouraging win for activists. She ran a campaign that emphasized her politics over her gender, but the win is made more meaningful for the stringently Catholic country’s pattern of violating the rights of LGBTQ individuals — and of course, their very own (now elected) “Donald Trump.”
