U.K. government reveals thousands died after their welfare payments were stopped

hellotailor:

U.K. government statistics reveal that thousands of people died within weeks of being found “fit to work” and having their welfare benefits cancelled.

The release of the statistics follows a protracted campaign from journalists and activists, including a Change.org petition that garnered almost 250,000 signatures. Many have already accused the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) of stalling its response until after this year’s election in May.

The most shocking mortality data comes from a document about disability-related benefits. Between December 2011 and February 2014, 81,140 people died within six weeks of “flowing off” benefits such as ESA (Employment and Support Allowance), which the government pays to people who cannot work due to illness or disability.

Over the past five years, the DWP has made a public effort to reduce the number of people claiming government benefits. This included the introduction of “fit to work” assessments, which are used to determine whether people are qualified to receive disability benefits.

The newly published documents show that 2,380 former ESA claimants died within two weeks of being declared “fit to work.”

when you have a problematic fave

[Woman: *kisses raven’s beak* Even though you are naughty, I still love you, aye.]

#goals

Stop everyone! These are the Knaresborough Castle ravens, and this ‘naughty’ raven is probably Izzie: the only bird in the UK to have been given an ASBO (a criminal conviction for anti-social behaviour).

Izzie pretends to get her head stuck in trash, so that when people get up to help her she can fly off and steal their sandwiches. She can mimic human speech, but does not do it often and when she does speak it’s usually rude. When we met the lady in chain mail in July 2013, she told us that Izzie had once flown up to a tourist and said “who the **** are you looking at?!”. The tourist was very offended and assumed it was the chain mail lady who had spoken. The birds are not on chains for their own protection, but for their bad behaviour. They are literally on the naughty step.

I went to Knaresborough on a day the ravens weren’t there, and I was disappointed. I asked the castle attendant when they would be back, and he said he didn’t know. The Raven Lady isn’t associated with the castle. She’s just someone with pet ravens who comes and goes when she pleases and likes to wear chain mail. Life goals or wife goals?

Read more about them >>>>here<<<<

Thank you for adding this, I was going to reblog it again with some info tonight and you beat me to it! Yes this one was Isobella! She also steals cameras from people, she pretends to have her foot stuck in an old water bottle and then goes and nicks stuff from the people who try to help her omfg

I didn’t think I could love this bird even more than I did before learning she’s a little crook.

Free voice mail provider struggling to survive

fycanadianpolitics:

KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – A small non-profit group that provides a vital service for people living in poverty, homeless people, women in violent relationships, and many others, is struggling to survive.

Whether you are looking for a job, an apartment, or any kind of support, a phone number where you can be reached is essential. But many people can’t afford a phone.

Now there is a solution.

The Red Bear Healing Home Society offers free voice mail to people living in poverty in Nova Scotia. Participants receive a telephone number with an extension to a voice mail box so people can leave messages for jobs, housing, health care, or simply to keep in touch with family and friends. […]

But maintaining the service is expensive, and the Red Bear Healing Home Society is struggling to make ends meet.

There’s about $8000 in the bank, yet a realistic annual budget is more like $35,000, says Conrod, who has not received any remuneration for over a year.

A request for help from the provincial Department of Community Services last year went nowhere.

“I hear their stories, people tell me what they are going through, and I believe them that they are having a hard time. So I don’t want to cut them off, take away the only way that they can be contacted,” Conrod says. “I don’t understand that the (potential) funders don’t see this.”

You can make a donation by calling 902 448-4744 or emailinfo@redbearhealinghome.ca. To help with costs involved in the provision of free voice mail the service is also available to those who can pay.

PLEASE READ, THIS IS IMPORTANT.

To all the Canadians out there, if you receive this envelope in your mail, DO NOT OPEN IT. It contains an *extremely* graphic anti-choice flyer put out by the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform and the Campaign Life Coalition. Both of these links contain *extremely* triggering content, you have been warned. This is a part of their “no2trudeau” campaign that has been running, apparently, since March.

Nice to know that the opposition is still being disgusting and underhanded.

i think more people should talk about the fact that a canadian-based company just literally dumped their trash here in the philippines and canada isn’t doing anything about it like we’re not your fucking trash can

it isn’t linked to in this article but there is a petition for canada to take back our garbage. it is causing environmental damage in the philippines and canadians need to do whatever we can to get this trash back to us for proper disposal

I want to vote but my anxiety is going to prevent me from doing so. I don’t even think I can register for voting because I can’t do it online (as I don’t have a drivers’ license). And even if I did, I don’t know now how I’d even manage going to the polls. Every year it’s the same battle. I’m 26 now and I’ve still never voted on anything. And of course, I end up feeling guilty because I didn’t. It’s such a great cycle. Any advice?

I don’t believe you need a drivers license to register. I don’t have one and voted in 2008 and 2011.

You can vote by by mail if you’re feeling too anxious to come in person:

a) Vote by mail – for electors who live in Canada

If your home is in Canada, you must wait until after an election is called to apply to vote by mail.

After an election is called:

  • Complete an Application for Registration and Special Ballot. The form will be available on this website, at any local Elections Canada office, at any Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate or by calling Elections Canada.
  • Send us your completed form and proof of identity and home address. You can submit them by fax, by mail, or in person at any local Elections Canada office.
  • Once your application is accepted, we will send you a special ballot voting kit by regular mail. (If you apply in person, staff will hand you the kit.) The kit explains how to mark your special ballot and mail it in.

Voting by mail means voting by special ballot. Read important information on voting by special ballot.

you could also go to advance voting, it might be less crowded then
