If you are a Canadian wanting to help the asylum seekers in the States, consider pushing your representatives to suspend the safe third country act. The States are no longer safe, and our PM has refused to ‘play politics’ with the inhumane acts in America. Let’s remind him that his job is to ‘play politics’. Protest. Yell. Make noise. There’s a petition, or places you can donate to in order to support the fight that our neighbours to our South are fighting. We can make change. Demand it. Push for it. If you can’t donate, make noise, reblog, call your politicians, condemn these actions, and make sure that the people around you know that this isn’t okay. And in the words of Elie Wiesel:
When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because oftheir race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment –become the center of the universe.
TBH a lot of my friends have been saying stuff like “it would be no good to try to flee to Canada, they have an extradition treaty with the US.”
If you want to help us, it’s time to start playing hardball with our horrible government.
Use resist bot to contact your reps, everyone. This shitshow won’t become law if they can’t reconcile the house & senate versions. Text “resist” to 50409. Here’s a prepared blurb if you’re the kind of person who likes something as a starter. I live in Texas, so the majority of my reps are Republicans supporting this bullshit. So here’s the more aggressive version first.
I am your constituent and I am contacting you to voice my STRONG opposition to the proposed tax bill. It is incredibly dangerous and will harm the VAST majority of Americans, especially those who are already marginalized, (specifically the poor, sick, and/or disabled.) I demand that you do the morally clear option and DO NOT ADVANCE this dangerous legislation further. It will only benefit the mega rich corporations, NOT the majority of your voters. Do the right thing for your constituents and abandon your support of the tax bill. We will remember this in 2018.
Here’s one for any reps you have who aren’t in support of it. (THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU TOO SO THEY KNOW THEY’RE DOING WHAT VOTERS WANT.)
I am your constituent and I am contacting you to voice my STRONG opposition to the proposed tax bill. As you know, it is incredibly dangerous and will harm the VAST majority of Americans, especially those who are already marginalized, (specifically the poor, sick, and/or disabled.) I thank you for standing in opposition to this morally corrupt and outright dangerous proposed legislation.
That last reblog I accidentally hit post too soon, so here it is in full! SHARE THIS
The Senate thought that this was the week they could repeal the Affordable Care Act and destroy Medicaid, but your persistence made them think twice. Last night, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that they didn’t have the votes–but there’s a catch. Now, in a last desperate attempt to take your health care away, the Senate is moving to vote on full repeal – a bill which would strip away the protections of the ACA without any kind of replacement. We can still make them back down and give up this disastrous fight for good–but they won’t do that without hearing from you.
Access to the care we need, regardless of disability or pre-existing condition
Coverage for mental health, maternity care, occupational and speech therapy, prescription medications, and more
Protection from discriminatory insurance practices such as annual and lifetime caps on coverage
Here’s what you can do:
Attend local actions and events. Today is a day of action for hundreds of community groups across the country, with more coming in the days ahead. Families USA has a list of upcoming rallies and events in many states. If you don’t see a local action on the list, try searching online for “upcoming healthcare rallies [name of your state]” to find other organizations near you that may have upcoming events. Check out the Center for Public Representation’s Action Center for more ways to get involved.
Go to your Senators’ local offices and tell their staff what you think. To find your Senators’ local offices, visit contactingcongress.org. Under the contact information for each Senator, there is a list of their local offices. You can contact or visit these offices to set up a constituent meeting – this is one of the most effective ways to get your point across to an elected official.
My name is [your full name]. I’m a constituent of Senator [Name] , and I live in [your town]. I’m calling to ask the Senator to vote NO on repealing the Affordable Care Act. If this bill is passed, 32 million Americans will lose health insurance. This bill takes away protections that patients depend on, and it will return us to the bad old days when people with disabilities like [me/ my family member/ my friends] were uninsurable. We can’t go back. Please vote AGAINST repealing the Affordable Care Act. It’s time for Congress to scrap repeal, leave Medicaid alone, and work together to improve the ACA. We’re counting on you to do the right thing.
Share your story by participating in the Arc’s emergency Medicaid Matters to Me Letter Writing Campaign. If you or a loved one rely on Medicaid or a waiver for health insurance or other disability services, take a moment to write a letter to your Senatorsexplaining why Medicaid matters to you, and email it to jorwic@thearc.org. Make sure to include your state in the subject line, and send the email by midnight on Wednesday. The Arc will print your letters and hand deliver to them to your Senators!
Senate leadership says they will replace the ACA later. But after everything they’ve tried this year, we know better than to hand them a blank check. It’s time for Congress to start over and work together on a meaningful, bipartisan basis to improve the Affordable Care Act and make health care better for all of us. Your voices and your advocacy have already made an incredible impact. Let’s make this week the final push to win this fight, once and for all.
My senator is Pat Toomey, one of the authors of the bill. I’ll admit I’m having trouble coming up with a script for calling him that isn’t “EAT IT, DOUCHEBAG.”
So, there’s this website and downloadable pdf called Invisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda. It’s where “former congressional staffers reveal best practices for making Congress listen”
It’s pretty dandy y’all should check it out
Also take a copy of The Activists’ Handbook by Aidan Ricketts which is an incredible book and a great stater for anyone who is brand new to practical activism and needs a helping hand on how to start in a safe, responsible and practical way
Stop telling me to respect Donald Trump
because he is the elected president.
Don’t ask me to respect a rapist.
Don’t ask me to respect a bully.
Don’t ask me to respect a misogynist.
Don’t ask me to respect a sexist.
Don’t ask me to respect a homophobe.
Don’t ask me to respect a racist.
Don’t ask me to respect an immature, privileged white male named Donald trump.
I will die before I respect a man rooted in hate. It’s not going to happen.
And ESPECIALLY don’t tell me to respect Donald Trump when you spent the last 8 years flagrantly disrespecting President Obama and being racist about it.
NEVER ACCEPT TRUMP AS PRESIDENT. EVER. Disrespect Trump as much as he disrespected President Obama. Protest. Fight back. He is not our president.
This is going to be the new “support the troops,” isn’t it. It’s a red herring. Don’t fall for it.
Hi so please vote Hillary so trans people can stay on hormones and go to the bathroom.
It would be nice if you could save your shows of write-in candidate bravado for a year when trans people aren’t being openly attacked and attacks on them literally aren’t part of the Republican platform.
I mean Bernie gave Hillary his endorsement and if he’s obviously gonna vote for her and not himself or a third party I think it’s time to vote for Hillary to not wreck a bunch of people’s lives for the sake of a spiteful political gesture.
This trans person says thanks.
Also, please vote for the 469 congress seats opening this year! As a friend pointed out, if you want to see real change, you have to stop focusing on the parlor politics. Vote Bernie for Speaker of the House. Vote Dems into congress. Vote progress past the White House, so we can actually make good things happen in this country instead of getting blocked every time there is a progressive idea brought up.
Seriously. If you are unhappy with the quality of presidential candidates, now’s the time to help someone better get a start on their political career so we can have better ones down the road.
