Neechi Rides founder says it’s too dangerous to take cabs in Winnipeg

It’s a one-man ride service for indigenous people in Winnipeg, and while Pernell Flett isn’t asking for money, he is collecting passengers’ stories.

“Some of them tell how cab drivers try to touch them, feel them up and take them places they don’t want to be,” Flett said of the indigenous people he drives around the city.

“A lot of them won’t speak out about it; they’re too scared to say anything about it.”

Flett started Neechi Rides on Dec. 15. It’s a ride service that he offers for free, and it is run out of his own pocket.

“When I watch the news at nighttime and see all the problems … I told my girlfriend, ‘You know what? I’m going to do something about this.’”

This man needs help in order to ensure the safety of our Native Women living in Winnipeg, and yet, just because he’s offering a safe ride for our Native people, he’s been the target of harassment and threats. We need to support our people who are doing the best they can!

Tabletop Gaming has a White Male Terrorism Problem

latining:

I am a gamer. I followed the call of Cthulhu and ran in the shadows with hackers and shamans. I traversed the ancient lands of Greyhawk, Faerun, and Eberron with companions new and old. I swung from an airship and buckled swash over London for the Kerberos Club. I threw dice and flipped cards and ground men into dust playing table-top wargames.

I don’t do that anymore.

Since July of 2015 fans of the game Malifaux have been attempting to overwhelm me with death and rape threats for no other reason than I am a woman who has opinions on the game. Wyrd Miniatures is silent on this matter and hangs up whenever anyone attempts to discuss the harassment. Given that a large number of threats identify the senders by name as Wyrd staff members, I do not find this surprising.

But that’s not what this article is about.

Pennsylvania shooting claims 6 black lives

Six people are dead after a pair of gunmen opened fire at a barbecue in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, Wednesday night. Four women, one man and an unborn child were shot at a private residence in what authorities are calling a coordinated attack. All of the victims were black.

While outlets across the country have given it some coverage, the incident has largely been spared the 24-hour news cycle treatment granted the likes of other recent attacks.

A fund has been set up to help the family defray the cost of losing 5 family members (plus one baby due in late May). One mother lost 3 adult children and 2 nieces in a few minutes of horrific gun violence. One of her sons is in critical condition in the hospital. She has several grandchildren who lost their parent.

The Shelton-Powell Memorial Fund has been set up at Citizens Bank to help the family with the burials and funeral. Walk into a Citizens branch and donate. (I will post more if I find out how to donate remotely.) This is one way to show this family that we are thinking of them in their time of grief, that we stand together against gun violence.

Tumblr staff can take the time to say it’s Valentine’s day, but not one second can be spared for black history month.

Fuck you @staff

Honestly though. #tumblrstaffsowhite

@staff

@staff

@staff

@staff ? 👀👀👀

We all know @staff is anti black.

I feel like Black Tumblr has been begging the staff to do something for Black History month for way too long. Yet we continue to use the sight. Maybe we should all log out for 24 hours in protest.

If we could all follow through with that, that’d be a great start.

I’m wondering if there are some members of black tumblr who have some website design skills. It’d be easy to just start a group on Facebook, but they’re no different. When white folks are at the helm, we can always expect some nonsense.

How about the day before the 1 year anniversary of Blackout day? Idk the exact date. But if we log out for that entire day they’ll feel our absence and then log back in the next day on Black Out Day and show them how strong our presence is!

March 6th is the anniversary. So the 5th it is. Now just need to get the word out.

#Blackoutlogout – March 5th.

If you’re not black but support #blacklivesmatter and #blackout – you’re asked to NOT log in tumblr on March 5th. Show solidarity. We aren’t asking you to raise a black glove fist, or hop in formation. Just give tumblr a break for 24 hrs. Your porn and stuff will be there.

Spread the Word.

DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR

lesserjoke:

bymyprettyfloralbonnet:

You know what’s awesome?  Research.  You know what’s not awesome?  Not being able to get access to research because it’s stuck behind a paywall and you don’t belong to an institution/your institution doesn’t subscribe to that particular journal.

FEAR NOT.

Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects.  Feel free to add if you like!

GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.

Directory of Open Access Journals– A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.

Directory of Open Access Books– Like the above, but for ebooks.  Also multidisciplinary.

Ubiquity Press– Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.  Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.

Europeana–  Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.

Digital Public Library of America– American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.

Internet Archive– In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.  Free!  And legal!  They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.

College and Research Libraries– Library science and information studies.  Because that’s what I do.

Library of Congress Digital Collections– American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.

LSE Digital Library– London history, women’s history.

Wiley Open Access– Science things!  Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.

SpringerOpen–  Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.

Elsevier Open Access–  Elsevier’s kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.  Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.

Also, remember — there is a wide world of researchers out there, most of whom don’t give two figs about paywalls. Let people know what you’re having trouble accessing, and you’d be surprised how quickly a copy will find its way to your inbox. And if you do belong to an institution with a library, check out their interlibrary loan system, which is a more official way of getting things from behind a paywall at no cost to you.

URGENT: STRAIGHT MALE ALLIES NEEDED TO SHUT DOWN LEGAL RAPE “INTERNATIONAL MEETING”

i-was-a-naive-prolifer:

kaagazkalam:

This coming Saturday, February 6, at 8pm local time, followers of “Roosh V”- noted sexist, racist, homophobic, and overall horrible monster (not a human being)- will be holding secret meetings to rally for rape to be legalized. You didn’t read this wrong THEY WANT RAPE TO BE LEGALIZED.

This shit is dangerous af, and as they have barred anyone who isn’t male or straight, so we need all our white male allies to gather and shut this shit down. If you are a straight man of colour, please be careful. Even though the website says the meeting is for straight men of all races, the Roosh V following has also been known to be very racist and xenophobic.

Here is how the meeting will take place, as according to their website (I’m not going to link it because it does not deserve any hits, but all the info here is authentic- you may google and see for yourself):

We will have 165 meetings in 43 countries for our international meetup day on February 6, 2016 at 8PM local time. Hosts have been instructed to wait at the meeting point from 8:00-8:20pm before moving on to the final location. If you arrive at the meeting point at 8:21pm, you will miss the meetup. Arriving on time within the window is absolutely paramount.

To identify your fellow tribesmen, ask the following question to a man you suspect is there for the meetup: “Do you know where I can find a pet shop?” If you are asked this question, answer in the affirmative: “Yes, it’s right here.” You can then introduce yourself and get details about where to proceed at 8:20. If you ask someone for the pet shop and they appear confused or actually try to direct you to a real pet shop, they’re not there for the meetup.

If you are a woman, DO NOT GO, your safety is at risk. Roosh V has made it very apparent that your presence might be met with violence.

I won’t be able to attend a shut down (obvs- brown gay turban guy), but we need to shut this down ASAP. So to all my white brothers who identify as allies, now is your time to stand up and act.

I will be calling the RCMP and reporting this, make sure you report this to your local police as well.

Here is a list of all the locations where these men will come together (Roosh V himself will be at the Washington DC location):

This bullshit MUST be shut down.

Here is some more info about how to identify these creeps.

Here is the archived link to the list of locations for their meetups (your traffic won’t go toward their website)

Here is more information about the loathsome manchild and rape legalization proponent Roosh V: [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x]

In short, here are the dirty deets:

If you’d like to help get these jerks shut down, go and counterprotest and report them to the police! They are a hate group and should be stopped!

LET’S DO THIS: Turn an abandoned hateful church into an LGBT homeless youth shelter

gaywrites:

Remember Atlah Worldwide Church in Harlem? The church that wrote “Jesus Would Stone Homos” and other anti-LGBT messages on its marquee?

They racked up over a million dollars in unpaid bills, and now the building is up for public auction. The Ali Forney Center, which houses about 107 homeless LGBT youth in New York City, is ready and willing to make an offer, buy the space and convert it into an LGBT homeless youth shelter – if we can help them come up with the money.

Since 2014, local Harlem residents have opposed Rev. Manning’s messages of hatred and violence by organizing a series of events to raise funds for the Ali Forney Center, as well as to increase awareness of the needs of homeless LGBT youths. Also they have organized a series of protests outside of Atlah Church. These efforts, under the name of Love Not Hate, have been coordinated by Stacy Parker Le Melle.

“I am ecstatic to imagine a future where our Harlem corner will be a home of compassion, not hatred.  We have a homeless problem in New York City. The de Blasio administration is working hard to remedy this, but LGBT young people are especially vulnerable with the shelter system. They need protection.  The Ali Forney Center is a beacon, but they need more space for transitional housing and job training. I can’t imagine a better use for that property.  Who needs more luxury condos?  We need to care for the most vulnerable in our midst.”

Le Melle continued “When the ATLAH story broke on Thursday, immediately I heard from neighbors: wouldn’t it be amazing if an LGBT group could acquire the property? What if it were the Ali Forney Center?  We all knew that this would be poetic justice. We need to care for those kicked out of homes, often on religious-based grounds. We need to care for those most vulnerable to ATLAH’s hate speech.”

Ali Forney needs at least $200k to begin to make this happen. If you can, donate. If you can’t, spread the word. There’s a whole lot of need in Harlem, and how amazing would it be to take a place that was a site of such hurt and vitriol and turn it into something truly life-saving?
