[A crowd of lego mini-figures]

Lego is excluding 150 million disabled children by failing to positively represent them in its products

Sign the petition asking lego to make mini-figures with disabilities, remind them that 15 percent of the world population are people with disabilities. We are the world’s largest minority, we are already mainstream in the real world (albeit still invisibilized and excluded) and should be shown in mainstream Lego mini-figures as well.

What it’s like to be slut-shamed when buying birth control

Even when pharmacists do let people access contraception, whether emergency contraception or condoms or prescription birth control pills, the process isn’t always free of judgment. In a series of recent online discussions, people across the country have begun to share stories of the stigma they’ve experienced. As many have pointed out, this can be especially damaging to teens.

DO YOU SEE THIS? PHARMACY EMPLOYEES IN THE U.S. ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO DO THIS. THAT GOES FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE FRONT AS WELL AS PEOPLE IN WHITE COATS BEHIND THE CAGE.

If an employee in a pharmacy makes a snide comment – Front store workers, pharmacists, or Pharmacy Techs give you shit? Gently (Or not so gently) remind them that the waiver they signed upon being hired legally binds them from commenting on your purchase, as it is a violation of privacy laws. Doing so is grounds for INSTANT termination and hefty fines.

Pharmacy workers (white coats) are legally obligated to ASK if you need an explanation of how medication works and any side effects, any medication conflicts etc. If you decline, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED AT ALL TO MAKE SNIDE REMARKS OR FARTHER COMMENT ON YOUR PURCHASE. FRONT STORE EMPLOYEES CAN NOT AT ALL COMMENT IN ANY WAY, IN ANY STORE WITH A PHARMACY IN IT.

Know your rights. If this shit happens? Call them the fuck out and ask to speak to a manager. Get worked up. Cause a scene. Threaten a Lawsuit. If you see this happening to someone else, and they seem to be struggling, speak up for them.

As a Pharmacy worker, you bet your ass I’ll protect you and your privacy. IT’S MY JOB.

this is also why @plannedparenthood is so important

emergency housing request~ [please reblob]

fl00zycaucus:

WELL

things escalated very quickly in my parents’ house in a way that I didn’t expect (but possibly should have) and I can’t figure out how to leave, which I need to do ASAP. I have never done a crowd-sourced emergency housing request before but I’m not in contact with anyone who still lives in the area and I think right now asking tumblr is my best bet:

Does anyone have a place that I can stay somewhere in the greater Boston area for tonight / tomorrow morning?

About me: 22, college student, queer-ID’ing, developmentally + psychiatrically disabled, hella PTSD. I live and go to school in Iowa, where I have a (safe) apartment. My goal is to get back to the apartment as soon as possible, but it will likely take several hours of research to find affordable options and I will most likely not be able to find a bus/train that leaves before tomorrow.

I am currently staying with my family of origin in MA for winter break. I’ve come home for breaks in previous years and it’s usually been stressful, but ok. This time, it is completely untenable and I am scared for my safety and I need to go!

If you have a place that I can stay please contact me through tumblr or email me at fieldbindergrinnedwryly AT gmail. Reblogs are DEFINITELY appreciated. I will update once I find a place to stay, get more info, whatever.

sent this along to one of my well-connected queer facebook friends in Boston.  hope it helps.

We’re always looking for new contributors! We can’t pay for every piece, but depending on your pitch, we’ll do our best. Check out our submission guidelines for more info.

I should add that we’re actually on the lookout for Jewish writers to comment on issues pertaining to media portrayals of Judaism and anti-Semitic content. We’ve been asked in the past why we don’t bring that sort of thing up very often; it’s because we don’t have any Jewish folks on staff! It’s one of our few blind spots and we don’t want to put words in people’s mouth.

TL;DR Jewish writers are especially encouraged to get in touch via the link above!

Never order from Gamer-heaven.net

My personal experience – dreadful.

Ordered one of those Zelda goodie boxes for my husband back in August. Never turned up.

Asked what was going on in October and they said there was a delay in getting the items- fair enough.

A week and a half ago (November 21st) I asked for a refund. 40 quid. Still no sign of the refund in my bank account.

They actually stole my money. And I know for a fact I’ll never get those items. I can’t work and Martin only works part-time (if he had his way, he’s have a full-time job) so 40 quid is a lot to us. Sending Martin up to the bank before he starts his shift because I’m not counting the “company” to actually give me the refund.

Here’s some stuff on their facebook page.

Here’s the website to avoid like the plague.

I was on this site earlier looking for some Christmas presents for a few friends….Glad I saw this…So rebloggin solely for any who was in my position and was thinking about getting something from these people.

Per tradition, here is our round-up of holiday gift suggestions! This year, we wanted to focus on Indigenous artists that are giving back to their communities–not only do all of these products feature Indigenous designers, but they also benefit great causes!

  • Her Braids (Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg and Timiskaming First Nation): 10% of the proceeds of every beaded necklace purchased from Her Braids goes to the David Suzuki Foundation’s Blue Dot Movement, which works towards universal access to clean drinking water in Canada.
  • The Heritage Center (Oglala Lakota): All of the items sold at The Heritage Center are made by local community members, and benefit the Red Cloud Indian School. Products include quillwork, beadwork, dentalium jewelry, ledger art, star quilts, and Lakota books & music.
  • Neechie Gear (Sweetgrass First Nation): Neechie Gear, which sells tees, sweatshirts, & sports apparel, donates a portion of their proceeds to supporting low-income kids play sports.
  • ShopIndig is partnering with Kiowa Sage to buy Christmas decorations, gifts, and groceries for an Aboriginal family in Saskatoon this year. ShopIndig also supports small Native-owned businesses by providing grants.
  • Native Northwest (various NW Coast): Native Northwest features tees, sweatshirts, boots & shoes, scarves, bags, hats, jewelry, phone cases, housewares, children’s toys, and a variety of other items featuring original designs by NW Coast artists. Native Northwest supports the Makah Cultural Center, U’mista Cultural Society, Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society, Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society, & Aboriginal Head Start Association.

pillowfort-io:

Hello everyone, now seems like a good time to finally tell
you all about Pillowfort.io, a blogging platform that I (juliabaritz) and
vaguestblogging

have been working on for a while. Basically, we wanted to start a new blogging
platform that takes our favorite features from sites we’ve used like
Tumblr and LiveJournal, and create the best kind of blogging platform we
could think
of. Our goals for Pillowfort are to create a place where fans and
creators alike can share their work, create a community of their own,
and do so in a
positive and safe environment.

On
Pillowfort you’ll be able to run a personal blog similar to how Tumblr
blogs operate, but also create communities similar to the ones that
LiveJournal features, so that you can easily share content with people who share your tastes and interests. We’re also
working on
privacy features like blocking users, the ability to make posts
rebloggable or un-rebloggable, and creating privacy lists so that your
posts will only be visible to certain users. In the next few
weeks, we’ll have more detailed posts about what Pillowfort is
going to look like and what features we’ll be including, but above are a
couple screenshots from the current state of the site so you can see
what we’re going for.

We want to get the word out, so share this
post if you would be interested in using a site like this so we can get
an idea of how many people are interested! This site would also be a very large undertaking for us to attempt to finish ourselves, so we would love for people who would be interested in helping us with the programming to contact us and let us know that you’re interested. The app is built on Rails and currently deployed on Heroku (using Postgres for the database), so a familiarity with Rails and PSQL is greatly preferred.

Interesting.

So basically, what Dreamwidth is to LJ, you’re hoping Pillowfort will be to Tumblr?

SIGN ME THE FUCK UP.

please let this pan out

Please please please consider the way people communicate as top priority. At least in the communities, a threaded comment system like LJ’s would be so appreciated. And a descent messaging system too.

I’ve been saying for years that tumblr was never meant to be a forum for communication. It was for minimalist sharing of photos and content like that. Over the years they’ve shoehorned in little fixes, but it’s still 98% impossible to hold a coherent conversation with more than two people, where it was a breeze on LJ.

@sellotapedglasses
Ease of communication is one of pillowfort’s big focuses, actually.
Every post will have threaded comments, like LJ’s posts did, and
communities will also have a dedicated forum section for even more
focused and streamlined discussion. 🙂

In need of help.

I need to pay $680 to my bank or i will be in serious trouble.

My mother took a loan in my name (without my knoledge)  and now she refuses to pay for it, saying that she spent that money on me, and that i would be the one who pays for it.

My father refuses to believe me so i am all on my own now.

I’ve sold my notebook, and some of my books but i am still in need so im here asking for a hand.

So if any of you could donate to my paypal it would be amazing.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=HPDW4THXUTV7S

I need to have all my debts on date if i want to get an scholarship so this is really important.

If you cant donate, just signal boost this!

Thank you very much!

Apparently this is something that can happen if you are in Brazil.  (I was pretty sure getting a loan in someone else’s name w/o their knowledge isn’t possible in the US, but outside the US…)

URGENT: get the hell off Apache OpenOffice, it’s insecure and not worked on any more. LibreOffice is better in literally every way.

reddragdiva:

you know OpenOffice, right? free substitute for Microsoft Office which is basically just as good, but free.

well, it’s not as good. and is in fact actively dangerous to use.

the security hole: HWP files can be exploited and pwn your PC. obscure minor format, no problem … except that if you get a HWP file with a .DOC extension – say, what appears to be a MS Word file emailed you by anyone – you can get pwned by that.

they’ve known about this since april 2015 and haven’t fixed it. they have distributed over 8 million known-vulnerable copies of AOO since 27 april. (and the 143 million vulnerable before that.)

the fix is, literally, remove one file from the installer. they haven’t got it together to do this in five months.

tell everyone you know. tell your writer friends. tell your family with that old copy.  tell anyone you see running OpenOffice. get LibreOffice, it also originated in OpenOffice but is actually developed and they show the slightest sign of caring about their end users. LO 5.0 is really very nice. much faster to use than 4.4 too.

so what’s going on here:

  • Sun Microsystems (mild yay) ran OpenOffice from 2000 to 2010. it was imperfect, but it was good enough and free and open-source. it accumulated one heck of a famous brand name. (“we need an office program” “how about that openoffice thing”)
  • Oracle (boo hiss!) bought Sun in early 2010. OpenOffice development stopped as they reassigned developers.
  • a bunch of non-Sun/Oracle developers went “bugger this” and forked it (‘cos it was open source) in late 2010. thus, LibreOffice, which immediately became stupidly better.
  • Oracle had a snit and shoved the corpse of OpenOffice at the Apache Foundation in mid-2011 at the behest of IBM, who wanted to do it their way.
  • Apache OpenOffice had nothing worth the trouble, but got downloads because of the famous “OpenOffice” brand name.
  • IBM gave up in late 2013. since then, AOO has literally been sixteen ex-Sun devs squatting the name and doing bugger-all with it. their reasons are unclear.
  • they insist they still have a product, even though what they’ve actually achieved has been to put over eight million downloads that they knew were vulnerable on people’s PCs. possibly your PC.
  • instead of fixing it, by removing one file from the installer, they post excuses for not doing stuff.

(if this sounds like a fascinating tale, feel free to check the extensively-cited history sections of the OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice articles on wikipedia, which i mostly researched and wrote.)

Apache OpenOffice’s lack of developers since IBM gave up is extensively documented. many have expressed concerns over the BLATANT SECURITY HOLE. in late august a Red Hat developer posted an open letter urging them to just give up the pretense and redirect the end users (that’s you) to LibreOffice. this had wide impact, and quite a pile of others concurred that they need to stop making life actively worse for the end users. the AOO people posted numerous comments making excuses … but they still distribute their known dangerous software and just won’t lift a finger to fix it.

tl;dr: get the hell off OpenOffice, get everyone you know the hell off OpenOffice. get LibreOffice, it is strictly superior in literally every dimension, and they actually give a damn about you the user and fix the security holes.
