In addition to the Archive of our Own, I wish we had a blogging platform of our own. A fandom social media site with the best of tumblr and livejournal and everything else that’s helped fandom thrive – only better. And user-focused. And with a sense of permanence so you wouldn’t have to worry about your fandom friends jumping ship to another platform.
Aren’t there any fans out there in Silicon Valley???
Because a social media/ networking site that does what it says and serves the needs of its users is possible. Ravelry, the site for knitters and crocheters, was coded by one person. It currently has a staff of, I think, four, serving more than 4million users. It includes databases of patterns, multiple spaces for users to keep their own records which are fully searchable, forums for discussion and friendship, groups of mutual interests, the ability to post pictures (they charge $5 a year if you want to post pictures directly to forums, it’s free to post pictures in your own project pages). They never seem to make changes that make things worse, but are constantly innovating. They maintain a user wish list that they actively try to fulfill. They post tutorials to help new users get the most out of the site. They have only ever gone down for a handful of hours that I’m aware of (the head coder has a server alarm by his bed, if anything goes wrong, he gets up, drives to the server and fixes it. While tweeting his progress). It is free, supported by ads you actually want to see.
Granted, it’s a smaller network for a niche interest group, but it proves what is possible if a developer is actually interested in the users’ interests and needs.
seriously i’m not showing you this because she’s my friend, i think this has a ton of potential. it’s created for fangirls by a fangirl.
^^Ya’ll, I just checked out that NerdNest site/app, and it looks REALLY cool. It would take a little getting used to, but imagine sort of Pinterest crossed with Tumblr. I signed up, because I could see it becoming a nice alternative to Tumblr at some point, if that because necessary. I like the look of it WAY more than soup.io.
If any of you Canadians are voting on Monday, please please please make sure your photo ID has your current address on it (i.e. the one that’s printed on your voter card). I cannot tell you how many people came through the advance polls with ID that did not have their current address because they had moved recently, etc. If you know your ID does not have your current address on it, you can:
Bring a copy of something that does, like a phone/utility bill, as long as it has your name on it (you can even use an e-bill on your phone)
If you drove to your polling station, the car insurance in your car works as a piece of ID (as long as all the info is correct)
Bring someone you know who can attest to your address (as long as they have proper ID)
Have two other pieces of ID with your name & current address on them
This is super important, guys. We turned away so many people last weekend because their drivers licenses did not have their current address on it and that was the only ID they brought. Please be prepared before going to vote!
Hello, My name is Laura Lewis and I am a nurse and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Vermont. I am looking for individuals who may be willing to participate in a research study about barriers to being formally diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as an adult. The study is entitled, “Barriers to formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder in adults.” I am looking for individuals who have been self-diagnosed or formally diagnosed with an ASD when you were 18 years old or older. Participation is entirely online and includes completing a survey about the types of barriers you faced in getting or formal diagnosis if you are diagnosed, or the reasons that you are not formally diagnosed if you are self-diagnosed. It will likely take about 30 minutes to complete. You must be 18 years or older to participate.
Okay, so here’s the thing. Art schools apparently want ~realism~ in their potential students portfolios. Also they don’t want fan art, pictures of celebrities, self portraits, etc. Which leaves me in a little bit of a bind because the only realism I’ve ever really done is of myself or of celebrities (aka Sebastian Stan). So, I really need people to draw. Not necessarily for my portfolio, most will probably just stay in my sketchbook tbh. So please reblog with your selfie tag if it’s cool if I draw you! And I’ll ask permission and everything before I even think of using it for my portfolio or posting it to tumblr. I can’t promise that I’ll draw every person that reblogs this, but I’ll try! Also make sure your ask box is open so I can ask permission to post!
Please do share this. If Elections Canada isn’t allowed to promote voting, then we have to.
Even if you’re not Canadian, please share this. The “Fair Elections Act” is bullshit.
We need to get out there and vote. We need someone other than the conservatives, even if it’s a minority or coalition.
