Free voice mail provider struggling to survive

fycanadianpolitics:

KJIPUKTUK (Halifax) – A small non-profit group that provides a vital service for people living in poverty, homeless people, women in violent relationships, and many others, is struggling to survive.

Whether you are looking for a job, an apartment, or any kind of support, a phone number where you can be reached is essential. But many people can’t afford a phone.

Now there is a solution.

The Red Bear Healing Home Society offers free voice mail to people living in poverty in Nova Scotia. Participants receive a telephone number with an extension to a voice mail box so people can leave messages for jobs, housing, health care, or simply to keep in touch with family and friends. […]

But maintaining the service is expensive, and the Red Bear Healing Home Society is struggling to make ends meet.

There’s about $8000 in the bank, yet a realistic annual budget is more like $35,000, says Conrod, who has not received any remuneration for over a year.

A request for help from the provincial Department of Community Services last year went nowhere.

“I hear their stories, people tell me what they are going through, and I believe them that they are having a hard time. So I don’t want to cut them off, take away the only way that they can be contacted,” Conrod says. “I don’t understand that the (potential) funders don’t see this.”

You can make a donation by calling 902 448-4744 or emailinfo@redbearhealinghome.ca. To help with costs involved in the provision of free voice mail the service is also available to those who can pay.

PLEASE READ, THIS IS IMPORTANT.

To all the Canadians out there, if you receive this envelope in your mail, DO NOT OPEN IT. It contains an *extremely* graphic anti-choice flyer put out by the Canadian Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform and the Campaign Life Coalition. Both of these links contain *extremely* triggering content, you have been warned. This is a part of their “no2trudeau” campaign that has been running, apparently, since March.

Nice to know that the opposition is still being disgusting and underhanded.

We do not let people disappear into these systems.  You know the drill.  Let’s find out who to contact and take care of our own.  I already said something to her friends about contacting their protection and advocacy system if they have not already.

This is their Twitter handle: @JeffcoColorado.

This is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/JeffcoColorado.

The right person to contact seems to be Rena L. Kuberski at (303) 271-4251 or rkuberski@jeffco.us.

If you have more time, it looks like the people responsible are part of the county’s Adult Services agency.  The person in charge of That agency’s phone number is (303)-271-1388.  This is a link to their email form.  DO NOT TIE UP THE COUNTY’S ADULT ABUSE HOTLINE.  This is one of the county commissioners.  I suggest voicing your opinions by commenting on her pictures, but LEAVE THE STUFF MEMORIALIZING THE SHOOTING VICTIMS ALONE.  You can reach another commissioner here and a third here and here

captioned-vines:

So far captioning vines on Tumblr as been a great success! I honestly never expected the amount of positive feedback, and the positive has definitely outweighed the negative! I remember starting this blog early March, not thinking about the impact it would have. Tumblr has been so accepting of closed captioning vines that I think we could make this bigger. I definitely need some help making this happen, so I ask you all to do what you can! And I ask if you’re a creator such as thatsthat24 victorpopejr meechonmars to please help spread the word! Thanks so much for all your help! We couldn’t have done it without all the support everyone has shown!

i’m seeing a lot of people reblogging suicide hotlines and this is just a reminder that this is a suicide help line that works like a text-based instant messenger for people who may need to talk to someone but have trouble/are uncomfortable making phone calls

Never don’t reblog this.
There are so many people who have such bad anxiety about phone calls.
This can save so many lives

But still interested in feeding yourself? What if I told you that there’s a woman with a blog who had to feed both herself and her young son…on 10 British pounds ($15/14 Euro) per week?

Let me tell you a thing.

This woman saved my life last year. Actually saved my life. I had a piggy bank full of change and that’s it. Many people in my fandom might remember that dark time as when I had to hock my writing skills in exchange for donations. I cried a lot then.

This is real talk, people: I marked down exactly what I needed to buy, totaled it, counted out that exact change, and then went to three different stores to buy what I needed so I didn’t have to dump a load of change on just one person. I was already embarrassed, but to feel people staring? Utter shame suffused me. The reasons behind that are another post all together.

AgirlcalledJack.com is run by a British woman who was on benefits for years. Things got desperate. She had to find a way to feed herself and her son using just the basics that could be found at the supermarket. But the recipes she came up with are amazing.

You have to consider the differing costs of things between countries, but if you just have three ingredients in your cupboard, this woman will tell you what to do with it. Check what you already have. Chances are you have the basics of a filling meal already.

Here’s her list of kitchen basics.

Bake your own bread. It’s easier than you think. Here’s a list of many recipes, each using some variation of just plain flour, yeast, some oil, maybe water or lemon juice. And kneading bread is therapeutic.

Make your own pasta–gluten free.

She gets it. She really does. This is the article that started it all. It’s called “Hunger Hurts”.

She has vegan recipes.

Don’t have an oven or the stove isn’t available? She covers that in her Microwave Cooking section.

She has a book, but many recipes can be found on her blog for free. She prices her recipes down to the cent, and every year she participates in a project called “Living Below the Line” where she has to live on 1 BP per day of food for five days.

Things improved for me a little, but her website is my go to. I learned how to bake bread (using my crockpot, but that was my own twist), and I have a little cart full of things that saved me back then, just in case I need them again. She gives you the tools to feed yourself, for very little money, and that’s a fabulous feeling.

Tip: Whenever you have a little extra money, buy a 10 dollar/pound/euro giftcard from your discount grocer. Stash it. That’s your super emergency money. Make sure they don’t charge by the month for lack of use, though.

I don’t care if it sounds like an advertisement–you won’t be buying anything from the site. What I DO care about is your mental, emotional, and physical health–and dammit, food’s right in the center of that.

If you don’t need this now, pass it on to someone who does. Pass it on anyway, because do you REALLY know which of the people in your life is in need? Which follower might be staring at their own piggy bank? Trust me: someone out there needs to see this.

DO NOT get GIMP, or any other software, from SourceForge!

the-rear-admiral:

This is mostly for my friends who prefer GIMP to photoshop but it applies to an awful lot of things so feel free to pass it on.

SourceForge, a popular repository for open-source projects, has had the option for developers to allow extra add-ons (read: toolbars, bloatware) to be inserted into their installers, but many opted out of this because the financial benefit was entirely SourceForge’s and just made their own software look sketchy. However, SourceForge is now forcing all accounts to include their add-on installers and hijacking accounts to do it, and some users are reporting the presence of malware in some. There is no way for a project to remove itself from SourceForge, and its high Google results direct users there instead of a project’s official page– the vast majority of projects on SourceForge are now on GitHub or Google Code instead.

The story from GIMP’s official website

Some of you might remember that in November 2013, we abandoned SourceForge (SF) as the primary download site for the GIMP installers for Windows platforms and moved the files to our own download server,download.gimp.org

The tons of links on the web pointing to the former site made keeping the installers there as well a necessity, though, and since SF claimed that our outrage over their “installer with benefits” was based on a misunderstanding, this seemed to be a low-risk approach.

However we are receiving reports that people who get there by chance receive small installers that include additional software. And it’s no clicks on those ‘big green download arrow’ ads this time, we’ve tried ourselves. SF has not responded to our inquiry yet, and we found that the maintainer of the GIMP for Windows installers is locked out of that SF project now.

Please go to our own downloads page to get the GIMP for Windows installers.

and as always, never ever ever use “express installations” or leave unnecessary checkboxes checked when installing any software onto your computer from any source

If you maintain a project on SourceForge, it’s time to move to GitHub or your own hosting  and spread the word to your users. VLC founder JDK has also invited any open source project in need of help with the SourceForge situation and with finding new hosting to contact him.

It looks like this has been addressed (although GitHub is still a better idea).

Attention to anyone in East Tennessee (I live in Knoxville).

Is there anyone who can take in my cat until I have a home? I am leaving my home in the next week or so because it is extremely unhealthy for me to remain here (being here so far has, anded me in a crisis center), and will be couch-surfing and possibly staying at a shelter until I can find housing.

I need somewhere for Casserole to go while I apply for Section 8 and disability. I can help kick money your way to pay for her food + litter.

She is less than two and a half, is long-haired but doesn’t shed too badly, and has her own harness and leash she walks on. She is housetrained and loves attention and has some separation anxiety. She is shy until she knows you and is okay with dogs and kids. Her only health problem is an allergy to something (it seems to be fleas) that makes her skin itch. She is spayed and UTD on her shots to my knowledge.

I rescued her and now I am rescuing myself. Because of my childhood trauma and my PTSD, if something happens to her while I am homeless it will completely wreck my world, so if you want to take her, make sure she will stay inside and be safe.

I WILL come back for her. She is my baby and my best friend and every moment she is gone my heart will be breaking. Frankly, it already is.

Please let me know if you know anyone who can help, and reblog this if you think it will help! Thank you!!!

we still don’t know how long my boyfriend will be able to stay at my old house with her after i leave, and we aren’t sure how long it will be until i have a stable home.

she will come with food, litter, her stuffed pickle, a harness and leash, her shot and spay records, and her laser pointer. she is talkative and sweet and goofy. please reblog this. finding somewhere safe for her to be will help take a massive amount of stress off of me. thank you.

So proud of my mother for doing her own research after I sent her that meme. A sign she hung in her car window.

Stay woke

Is this true?

Not only is it true, it gets worse. The Susan G Komen For The Cure Foundation has actually successfully sued “competing” charities, because (paraphrasing) their “message or branding was infringing.”

You read that correctly: they took money that people had donated to cure cancer, and hired attorneys with it, to sue ANOTHER group of people trying to find a cure for cancer, who, in turn, had to us their donated money to hire their own legal counsel to defend themselves.

Yeah signal boost because not enough people know about this and seriously FUCK SUSAN G. KOMEN THEY ARE THE ACTUAL WORST
