cards against humanity not only buying part of the U.S border to stop trump from building the wall between the U.S and Mexico but also hiring a law firm specializing in eminent domain with the intent of making it harder and more expensive for the government to build the wall has got to be the boldest move in this stupid simulation we’re living in. not all heroes wear capes

Imminent domain

It’s called eminent domain and, like the OP said, they made it as difficult as possible for the government to go through that process because they funded the property with thousands of $15 donations from their fans. The lawyers they retained wrote a statement which details the process and how they intend to slow-roll the administration’s ability to take the land, with a goal of at least pushing their attempts back until the current administration changes. They obviously cannot prevent the gov from building the wall but they have a series of assurances in place to make it annoying as fuck of a process.

His name is

Onur Albayrak! Here’s the story.

image

Hurriyet Daily News reports that Albayrak had been hired to photograph the July 5th wedding at Turgut Özal Nature Park in the eastern Turkish province of Malatya. On the day of, when he noticed that the bride-to-be didn’t look like an adult, he asked the groom her age and learned that she was only 15.

“The groom had come to my studio some two weeks ago and was alone,” Albayrak tells the Daily News. “I saw the bride for the first time at the wedding. She’s a child, and I felt her fear because she was trembling.

Albayrak then reportedly refused to continue as the wedding photographer and attempted to stop the wedding.

The argument soon turned physical when the groom attacked him as he was attempting to leave, Albayrak says. The photographer ended up breaking the client’s nose in the fight, according to local reports.

Albayrak confirmed the reports in a Facebook post, which has been met with widespread approval, attracting thousands of Likes and hundreds of overwhelmingly positive comments.

“I wish this had never happened, but it did,” Albayrak writes. “And if you were to ask me if I’d do the same thing again, I’d say ‘yes.’ Child brides are [victims] of child abuse and no power on earth can make me photograph a child in a wedding gown.”

The legal minimum age for marriage in Turkey is 18-years-old for both sexes, and child marriage is punishable by imprisonment for men who marry underage girls. Despite being outlawed, however, child marriage is still prevalent in the country and remains a controversial political issue.

[Source] – go read the rest!

this guy is a hero.

btw – let’s remind ourselves, americans, that unlike turkey, in the US the legal minimum age for marriage is only 18 in two states. in alabama, you can be married as young as fourteen years old if you have “parental permission”. in california, you can get married under 18 if you go to counseling, have a parent with you when you apply for the marriage license, and appear before a judge. in some states, there isn’t even a specific minimum age for marriage.

the minimum marriage age for girls in new hampshire is 13 years old.

48 states allow child marriage.

child marriage is not an “over there” problem, it happens right here, legally. any one of us might find ourselves called upon to break somebody’s nose if we encounter something like this occurring. we also have a responsibility to support groups and laws trying to end child marriage in this country.

If you are a Canadian wanting to help the asylum seekers in the States, consider pushing your representatives to suspend the safe third country act. The States are no longer safe, and our PM has refused to ‘play politics’ with the inhumane acts in America. Let’s remind him that his job is to ‘play politics’. Protest. Yell. Make noise. There’s a petition, or places you can donate to in order to support the fight that our neighbours to our South are fighting. We can make change. Demand it. Push for it. If you can’t donate, make noise, reblog, call your politicians, condemn these actions, and make sure that the people around you know that this isn’t okay. And in the words of Elie Wiesel:

When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because oftheir race, religion, or political views, that place must – at that moment –become the center of the universe.

TBH a lot of my friends have been saying stuff like “it would be no good to try to flee to Canada, they have an extradition treaty with the US.”

If you want to help us, it’s time to start playing hardball with our horrible government.

Emergency contraceptive info for US readers

Ok, I have now mentioned this three times in comments on Facebook, so it gets its own post, which I am cross posting across platforms.

I am not citing sources because I’m on my phone and this is all easily Google able. If anyone wants to drop links in reblogs for those who find Google difficult, I’d appreciate it.

SO.

Yes, you can get Plan B online, without a prescription, for relatively cheap.

HOWEVER.

Plan B loses efficacy in people 165lbs or over, and is completely ineffective at 175lbs. The median weight of Americans with uteri is 166lbs.

The Ella pill is efficacious regardless of weight. It is much more expensive ($67 vs $12) and requires a prescription.

BUT. PRJKT RUBY does a free online consultation, after which they will give you a prescription – and, if you like, ship you the pill. They will do this for other contraceptive methods as well.

And if you need help with the cost, my asks are open. If I don’t have it myself, I can help you find it.

                                 *~* NEW YEARS 2018 *~*

Driven by outrage and a resolve to correct a power imbalance that seemed intractable just months ago, 300 prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors, producers and entertainment executives have formed an ambitious, sprawling initiative to fight systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood and in blue-collar workplaces nationwide.

The initiative called TIME’S UP includes:

  •  A legal defense fund, backed by $13 million in donations, to help less privileged women — like janitors, nurses and workers at farms, factories, restaurants and hotels — protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.
  • Legislation to penalize companies that tolerate persistent harassment, and to discourage the use of nondisclosure agreements to silence victims.
  •  A drive to reach gender parity at studios and talent agencies that has already begun making headway.
  • And a request that women walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes speak out and raise awareness by wearing black.

Powerful Hollywood Women Unveil Anti-Harassment Action Plan

Happy 2018, dear Reckoners.

I’m so proud of us.

I’m so proud of everything we’ve done and everything we’ve learned (like just how important our city councils are).  I’m so proud of all the phone calls we’ve made, for each other, and even though we hate it because tons of us have anxiety or autism or ADHD.

The tax bill sucks a lot, but it is the first and only piece of major legislation that Trump has managed to get past Congress so far, and that’s largely because of a whole lot of people like you.

This year has been awful…and also so much better than I thought it might be.

Thank you and welcome to 2018.

Let’s fuck it up.

The opposite of grimdark is hopepunk. Pass it on.

#this is a good post #also I need an example of hopepunk #bc the name #resonates with me #and I need it #please #if you don’t mind (via @lavender-starling)

So the essence of grimdark is that everyone’s inherently sort of a bad person and does bad things, and that’s awful and disheartening and cynical. It’s looking at human nature and going, “The glass is half empty.”

Hopepunk says, “No, I don’t accept that. Go fuck yourself: The glass is half-full.”  YEAH, we’re all a messy mix of good and bad, flaws and virtues. We’ve all been mean and petty and cruel, but (and here’s the important part) we’ve also been soft and forgiving and KIND. Hopepunk says that kindness and softness doesn’t equal weakness, and that in this world of brutal cynicism and nihilism, being kind is a political act. An act of rebellion

Hopepunk says that genuinely and sincerely caring about something, anything, requires bravery and strength. Hopepunk isn’t ever about submission or acceptance: It’s about standing up and fighting for what you believe in. It’s about standing up for other people. It’s about DEMANDING a better, kinder world, and truly believing that we can get there if we care about each other as hard as we possibly can, with every drop of power in our little hearts.

Going to political protests is hopepunk. Calling your senators is hopepunk. But crying is also hopepunk, because crying means you still have feelings, and feelings are how you know you’re alive. The 1% doesn’t want you to have feelings, they just want you to feel resigned. Feeling resigned is not hopepunk.

Examples! THE HANDMAID’S TALE is arguably hopepunk. It’s scary and dark, and at first glance it looks like grimdark because it’s a dystopia… but goddammit she keeps fighting. That’s the key, right there. She fights every single day, because she won’t let them take away meaning from her life. She survives stubbornly in the hope that one day she can live again. “Don’t let the bastards grind you down,” is one of the core tenets of hopepunk, along with, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”

Jesus and Gandhi and Martin Luther King and Robin Hood and John Lennon were hopepunk. (Remember: Hopepunk isn’t about moral perfection. It’s not about being as pure and innocent as the new-fallen snow. You get grubby when you fight. You make mistakes. You’re sometimes a little bit of an asshole. Maybe you’re as much as 50% an asshole. But the glass is half full, not half empty. You get up, and you keep fighting, and caring, and trying to make the world a little better for the people around you. You get to make mistakes. It’s a process. You get to ask for and earn forgiveness. And you love, and love, and love.)

And THIS, this is hopepunk:

HOPE AND HONESTY IN A SOCIETY THAT VALUES CYNICISM AND DECEPTION IS SUBVERSIVE AND THEREFOR PUNK

I AM HERE FOR THIS MOVEMENT. HOPE AND HONESTY ARE DEEPLY PUNK ROCK. KINDNESS IS GOTH AS FUCK.

😖Fuck humanity.

Wow this truly was everything horrifying bundled into one monstrous package.

@whatbigotspost since you’re posting stuff about the new bill

Here’s my post w/ sources for some of this stuff.

Use resist bot to contact your reps, everyone. This shitshow won’t become law if they can’t reconcile the house & senate versions. Text “resist” to 50409. Here’s a prepared blurb if you’re the kind of person who likes something as a starter. I live in Texas, so the majority of my reps are Republicans supporting this bullshit. So here’s the more aggressive version first.

I am your constituent and I am contacting you to voice my STRONG opposition to the proposed tax bill. It is incredibly dangerous and will harm the VAST majority of Americans, especially those who are already marginalized, (specifically the poor, sick, and/or disabled.) I demand that you do the morally clear option and DO NOT ADVANCE this dangerous legislation further. It will only benefit the mega rich corporations, NOT the majority of your voters. Do the right thing for your constituents and abandon your support of the tax bill. We will remember this in 2018.

Here’s one for any reps you have who aren’t in support of it. (THEY NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU TOO SO THEY KNOW THEY’RE DOING WHAT VOTERS WANT.)

I am your constituent and I am contacting you to voice my STRONG opposition to the proposed tax bill. As you know, it is incredibly dangerous and will harm the VAST majority of Americans, especially those who are already marginalized, (specifically the poor, sick, and/or disabled.) I thank you for standing in opposition to this morally corrupt and outright dangerous proposed legislation.
