[Image Description] Cover image for the article “19 Makeup Tips that are Actually Helpful for Trans Women. Four trans women are shown having makeup applied to their face by the makeup artist that advised the writing of this article. [End Image Description]

This is a *really good* article that both handles anatomy concerns and presumes zero background makeup knowledge. Well done.

It’s amazing that the cover photo is showing both older women and people of color, something that the media consistently ignores regarding the trans community.

im really scared because when i get older i really really want children (my future wife and i will most likely adopt as well) but because i’m autistic i’m really nervous i’m gonna be a bad mother purely because of that, though i’ve been told that i have motherly qualities… but are there any blogs dedicated to parents who have autism since everything i see are dedicated to parents of autistic kids which makes me even more concerned?

autisticadvocacy:

Don’t be scared! Or at least, not more scared than anyone considering parenthood! Autism will NOT make you automatically a bad parent. There are numerous autistic bloggers who happen to also be parents, and resources for disabled parents. We share them periodically, so keep your eyes out!

Some Autistic Bloggers who are parents include:

Morénike Onaiwu, who is an autistic Woman of Color who has both natural and adopted children, some of whom are autistic and some who are HIV+.

Judy Endow Is an autistic who is also a mother, though her posts tend to come from her experiences as an autistic with an MSW.

This facebook page is dedicated to being Autistic Parents.

And there are numerous facebook groups, many of them closed (you can’t see the posts if you aren’t a member) for autistics who are parents.

I’ll keep a look out!

There are also resources for disabled parents,  the http://www.disabledparenting.com/

Followers, what resources do YOU like for autistic parents?

DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR

lesserjoke:

You know what’s awesome?  Research.  You know what’s not awesome?  Not being able to get access to research because it’s stuck behind a paywall and you don’t belong to an institution/your institution doesn’t subscribe to that particular journal.

FEAR NOT.

Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects.  Feel free to add if you like!

GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.

Directory of Open Access Journals– A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.

Directory of Open Access Books– Like the above, but for ebooks.  Also multidisciplinary.

Ubiquity Press– Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.  Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.

Europeana–  Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.

Digital Public Library of America– American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.

Internet Archive– In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.  Free!  And legal!  They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.

College and Research Libraries– Library science and information studies.  Because that’s what I do.

Library of Congress Digital Collections– American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.

LSE Digital Library– London history, women’s history.

Wiley Open Access– Science things!  Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.

SpringerOpen–  Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.

Elsevier Open Access–  Elsevier’s kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.  Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.

Also, remember — there is a wide world of researchers out there, most of whom don’t give two figs about paywalls. Let people know what you’re having trouble accessing, and you’d be surprised how quickly a copy will find its way to your inbox. And if you do belong to an institution with a library, check out their interlibrary loan system, which is a more official way of getting things from behind a paywall at no cost to you.

Writing advice you’re not going to like.

People sometimes send me Asks wanting writing advice.  I suck at it.  I don’t really know how I do the writing, or how one should do the writing, or what one should do to get better at the writing.  All I can ever think to say is “write a lot of stuff and you will get better at the writing.”  Which is true, but hardly a bolt from the sky.

Well, as it turns out, I do have one piece of Legit Writing Advice, and I am going to share it with you, right now.  If you were in any of my writing workshop groups at a con, you’ve heard this advice already.

Warning: you’re going to fucking hate it.  But if you do it, you will thank me.

If you have a piece of fiction you’re serious about, something you might want to actually shop around, or just something you really are into and want to make it as good as you can…do NOT edit it.

Repeat.  DO NOT EDIT.

REWRITE.

As in, print out the whole fucking thing and re-enter it, every word (or use two screens).  Retype the whole thing.  Recreate it from the ground up using your first draft as a template.  Start with a blank page and re-enter every. single. word.

I hear you screaming.  OH MY GOD THAT’S INSANE.

Yes.  Yes, it is.

It is also the most powerful thing you will ever do for a piece of fiction that you are serious about.

Now, let’s get real.  I don’t do this for most things.  I don’t do it for my fanfiction.  But if it’s something original, something I might like to get to a professional level – I do it.  You absolutely COULD do it for fanfiction.  It’s just up to you and how much time you want to sink into a piece.

You can edit, sure.  But you WILL NOT get down to the level of change that needs to happen in a second draft.  You will let things slide.  Your eyes will miss things.  You will say “eh, good enough.”

The first time I did this, on someone else’s advice, I was dubious.  Within two pages, I was saying WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN DOING THIS ALL THE TIME.  I was amazed at how much change was happening.  By the time I got to the end, I had an entirely different novel than the one I’d started with.  When you’re already re-entering every single word, it’s easy to make deep changes.  You’ll reformat sentences, you’ll switch phrases around, you’ll massage your word choice.  You’ll discover whole paragraphs that don’t need to be there at all because they became redundant.  You’ll find dialogue exchanges that need reimagining.  Whole plot points will suddenly be different, whole story arcs will reveal their flaws and get re-drawn.

You cannot get down to the fundamental level of change that’s required just by editing an existing document.  You have to rebuild it if you really want your story to evolve.  You will be AMAZED at the difference it will make.

It will take time.  It will seem like a huge, Herculean task.  I’m not saying it’s easy.  It isn’t.  But it is absolutely revolutionary.

Try it.  I promise, you will see what I mean.

*PSA: Tipsy!Lori wrote this post.  In case you couldn’t tell.

maybe i should try this with my comic scripts.

This advice is real.

7 QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD ASK AT THE END OF EVERY JOB INTERVIEW.

Click here to find out why these questions help you.

This is so important!

I never know what to ask and end up looking like a fool cause I don’t have a question prepared.

Don’t be me.

The weird thing about this post is that it ALWAYS shows up when I have an interview

i am a manager and this is exactly what I look for.

Removing EXIF DATA, as simply as possible

kingjaffejoffer:

thighetician:

Step 1) should always be to turn off Geotagging on your phone. Take care of that and the majority of any worries are dealt with. For further piece of mind though

I had to remind myself how to do this last night and I know I’m not the only one who could use the refresher

This is seriously important.

I see a lot of people, especially women on Tumblr, who still have the GPS data still embedded in the pictures they post here.

That means anybody on the internet can see exactly where you live because most of the pictures you’re posting were taken at home.

The option to turn off Geotagging varies from phone to phone but is generally done by opening your camera app, going to settings, and then disabling geotagging.
