hello! um sorry if you’ve answered this before but i was wondering if there’s anything to know/make sure of when captioning videos? I’d love to start trying to caption things I come across for those who can’t hear/hear very well but I’m not sure of the dos and don’ts

captioned-miscellaneous-videos:

Sure! You can follow through with this little tip list:

this is your psa to NOT USE AO3 TAGS the same way you would use tags on tumblr! AO3 goes through a lot of effort to create and track tags, whereas tumblr is freeflow and blog-respective. please only use AO3 tags that have story relevancy, NOT AS PERSONAL TAGS.

list of good example tags:

  • Alternate Universe
  • Alternate Universe – Canon divergent
  • slow burn

list of bad example tags:

  • apparently [X] was already a tag
  • I don’t know what else to tag this as lol
  • you know what I mean

#this is something that is very work-heavy for ao3 mods please don’t do this

I’ve read multiple posts from ao3 mods saying this is not true.

FROM AO3′S OWN TUMBLR:

“The kind of one-off commentary tags that are frequently referred to as Tumblr-style tags do not put any kind of extra strain on the database, or require more work from the wranglers than any other Additional Tag, such as Romance or Angst or Pretzels. Even the fact that there are a lot of them isn’t really an issue.”

It doesn’t create more work for the wranglers than the simple act of wrangling already does. And trust us: the wranglers really, really like organizing your tags in the background.”

[x]

AO3 mods have confirmed themselves that there is nothing wrong with people rambling in tags. It doesn’t strain the database, it isn’t any harder on the wranglers than any other tag. In fact, rambling tags are probably easier for them to chuck into the freeform or additonal category than someone who accidentally tries to create a new tag for a ship or kink or something.

Don’t tell people they can’t express themselves in the tags. It’s not just “ummmm lol so yeah” kind of stuff, some of it expresses things that are hard to tag for but the readers might want to know about the fic ahead of time. For example one of mine: “this is really just fluff + flirting and implied stuff at the end” or “X embarrassing Y and annoying the hell out of Z”. Should that stuff be in author’s notes? Probably. Am I going to put it there? For various reasons, no, the main reason being that you can’t see author’s notes from the outside of the fic.

In general, just stop spreading misinformation please, it took me two seconds to look up AO3′s actual opinion on rambly tags instead of assuming.

I’m glad this is officially confirmed! I love creative freeform tags on AO3! Basic ship and type of story tags are useful for searching, but there really aren’t that many. Once you’ve got “first time” or “established relationship” or “PWP” or “angst” or “BDSM” or whatever, what else could people realistically search by that isn’t ridiculously specific? I mean I’d tag a specific thing on request, but usually I can’t think of anything else helpful to include so I like to give a freeform overview of my story in the tags. And I love other people’s original tags – like the poster above says, you can see them before you decide to click and I have often chosen to read things because of tags I liked. Fine, some readers won’t like them, but if they don’t like the style of my tags perhaps they won’t like the style of my fic either so no harm no foul, right?

I want to vote but my anxiety is going to prevent me from doing so. I don’t even think I can register for voting because I can’t do it online (as I don’t have a drivers’ license). And even if I did, I don’t know now how I’d even manage going to the polls. Every year it’s the same battle. I’m 26 now and I’ve still never voted on anything. And of course, I end up feeling guilty because I didn’t. It’s such a great cycle. Any advice?

I don’t believe you need a drivers license to register. I don’t have one and voted in 2008 and 2011.

You can vote by by mail if you’re feeling too anxious to come in person:

a) Vote by mail – for electors who live in Canada

If your home is in Canada, you must wait until after an election is called to apply to vote by mail.

After an election is called:

  • Complete an Application for Registration and Special Ballot. The form will be available on this website, at any local Elections Canada office, at any Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate or by calling Elections Canada.
  • Send us your completed form and proof of identity and home address. You can submit them by fax, by mail, or in person at any local Elections Canada office.
  • Once your application is accepted, we will send you a special ballot voting kit by regular mail. (If you apply in person, staff will hand you the kit.) The kit explains how to mark your special ballot and mail it in.

Voting by mail means voting by special ballot. Read important information on voting by special ballot.

you could also go to advance voting, it might be less crowded then

Friendly reminder from your favorite intersex blogger that saying “people with vaginas” does not inherently mean “people who menstruate,” nor does it necessarily mean “people with ovaries.”

Please do us all a favor and say what you mean rather than making logical leaps that don’t exist for everyone.

Thank you guys for making this post as popular as it is! It’s really nice to see that so many folx care about intersex issues after all.

Cellulite is a female secondary sex characteristic and should be celebrated as a rite of womanhood, not despised or eradicated.

it’s really a secondary sex characteristic?!

It is. It has to do with the way our bodies network fat. Female bodies create sort of a mesh network to support fat (female bodies are MUCH more hardy in times of stress) and it can present as delightfully lumpy. More than 90% of women have visible cellulite, but all women store fat in this manner.

why did no one tell me this?!

You know why :/
